Rusty Rackets Coaching Courses

If you’re relatively new to tennis, looking to improve your skills, or returning after a break, our new five-week ‘Rusty Rackets’ courses are the perfect way to get out on court.

These courses cost just £50 and are being held on Tuesday evenings from 7 pm to 8 pm, starting on April 14 and June 2, and on Friday lunchtimes from 12 noon to 1 pm, starting on April 17 and June 5. The weekly one-hour adult group sessions will be led by one of our experienced LTA-accredited coaches, and are also open to non-members.

Pickleball is fast becoming established at Cheam Fields Club, offering two regular weekly social sessions and attracting a growing number of players. Why not join up and join in?

WEEKLY SOCIAL SESSIONS:

Mondays – 12 noon to 2 pm

Wednesdays – 2 pm to 4 pm

Pickleball memberships are now available to new members for £45. Existing Bowls and Tennis members can add pickleball for a small additional fee.

Need a local venue to hire?

Do you need to find a handy local venue for a celebration or a smaller gathering? The main Clubhouse building and Centenary Pavilion at Cheam Fields Club are available to hire at reasonable rates.

What’s more, there is a 50 per cent discount for Club members who have retained their membership for five years or more.

The Clubhouse can accommodate up to 90 people and is suitable for social functions, parties, family occasions and larger events. A bar service and catering can be arranged. The hourly hire rate is £40.

The Centenary Pavilion is suitable for meetings and smaller groups of up to 20 people. The hourly hire rate is £20.

Tennis CHAMPIONS of 2025

That’s it for another year. Cheam Fields Club’s Tennis Finals Day, held on June 28, showcased some impressive tennis and great sportsmanship.

Several of our finalists this year grew up and learnt their tennis skills as Juniors and Young Adults at Cheam Fields Club. Congratulations to all of them. And to our youngest player on the courts, a men’s doubles and mixed doubles finalist, who now follows in their footsteps and is one to watch for the future.

This year’s Finals Day kicked off with the Junior Tennis Finals, arranged by Cheam Fields Club’s head coach, Mark Love of MDL Coaching. Well done to all our junior champions and finalists.

Afternoon play saw Holly Tresadern secure the hat-trick, winning the Ladies’ Singles against Lauren Waller, last year’s champion, the Ladies’ Doubles, partnered with Keerti Sethia, and the Mixed Doubles, with brother Alex. Both the Ladies’ Singles and Doubles were hard fought and won in close 10-point championship tie-breaks.

Congratulations to all this year’s champions and finalists who gave their all on the courts, displayed form and finesse, and delivered a crowd-pleasing show for the spectators, with a few nail-biting moments and laughs mixed in.

The CLAY is ready for PLAY

Cheam Fields Club’s two new artificial clay courts are ready for play, marking an exciting start to a summer of great tennis.

It’s history in the making with the Club now offering players a choice of two great all-weather playing surfaces, including artificial clay and artificial grass.

Both offer premium surfaces that allow players to develop their games in different ways. The medium-height ball on the clay offers longer rallies and more strategic play, while on the artificial grass courts, players enjoy a faster-paced game with plenty of opportunities to get to the net.

The new surface complements the Club’s four artificial grass courts that have all been recently resurfaced.

Spring 2025 Tennis Newsletter

Here’s a quick roundup of key points:

GENERAL

Great news for Cheam Fields Tennis is that Courts 5 and 6 will be resurfaced with artificial clay. The project will begin on Monday, May 19, and take 2 to 3 weeks.

Three key members will leave the Tennis Committee at this year’s Tennis AGM on May 15. Thanks to Chairman Mark Hunnable, Tennis Secretary Anthea Brunton-Reed, and Welfare Officer Sara Tresadern for their valued input. They leave the Committee in a strong position for the future.

Safeguarding remains a top priority at Cheam Fields Club. Sara Tresadern championed this important role for many years. Sara’s responsibilities will be passed on to newly trained representatives for Tennis and Bowls.

The initiative with Cuddington Croft School will run for 10 weeks this spring, providing learning opportunities for local children. Sessions will use courts 1 to 3 on Thursday and Friday, from April 21 to May 19 and June 2 to June 30.

Membership renewals for 2025 are due on April 1. Don’t forget to join up and join in another great year of tennis at Cheam Fields Club.

The Club will have a recruitment stall at the annual Cheam Charter Fair on Saturday, May 17. Please pop down, or better still, let us know if you can lend a hand on the stall.

COMPETITIVE TENNIS

The Wilson Surrey Winter Leagues for 2025 are nearing their conclusion. The latest results are in the newsletter or online. Thanks to all those who give their time to captaining the teams.

CLUB TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2025

Entries for the annual Cheam Fields Tennis Championships are now open. Finals Day is on Saturday, June 28. Players can choose from singles, doubles and mixed open competitions, plus a new Mixed Vets category (ladies 50 years and over and men 55 years and over).

SUPPORT YOUR TEAM – GET A HOODY

The Cheam Fields hoody, designed to commemorate the Club’s 110th birthday, is a great way to show support for the Club and your team. They are available in junior and adult sizes from Cheam Sports Shop in Cheam Village. A zip-up hoody is also available.

YOUNG ADULT TENNIS

Tennis for Young Adults (aged 18 to 28) at Cheam Fields includes a lively weekly Tuesday evening session, social tennis and team play, plus great membership opportunities. Contact Lauren for further information.

JUNIOR TENNIS

Congratulations to the Club’s Under 16s boys’ team on qualifying for the knockout stages of the Surrey Winter Leagues.

Our Saturday Junior coaching sessions continue to thrive. There are free try-out slots for younger learners aged 4 to 8 years. Contact Head Coach Mark Love for further information.

GENERAL

The move into Autumn and Winter focuses attention on the ongoing maintenance of the tennis courts. Four out of six Club courts are newly resurfaced, leaving two courts that now need an upgrade.

The Cheam Fields Tennis Championships 2024 were a great success. Finals Day was an ideal opportunity for everyone to meet the new Club chairman, Alan Swinton, who presented the trophies. Match reports and images can be found in the newsletter and website gallery.

Safeguarding remains a key focus at Cheam Fields Tennis. Welfare Officer Sara Tresadern has worked hard to create a positive and safe environment with strong safeguarding procedures. Learn more about this rewarding role in the newsletter. Several volunteering roles are open and are a great way to support the Club.

SOCIAL TENNIS

All of the Club's social tennis sessions are proving popular. There's a session to suit everyone, so please check out what's offered.

TEAM TENNIS

Match reports and results for the Wilson Surrey Summer leagues and Dorking and Leatherhead evening leagues are in the newsletter and on the website. Congratulations to all the players and team captains.

Notable promotions in the Wilson Surrey leagues were Ladies' 2 (Open Doubles, Division 13) and Midweek 1s (Division 4). Our Dorking & Leatherhead Mixed Vets team also won Division 3.

JUNIOR TENNIS

Junior tennis continues to thrive at Cheam Fields Club under the expert guidance of MDL Coaching. Taster sessions are available. Plus, there are great Junior and parent membership opportunities.

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT WITH A HOODY

Mixed Doubles Tennis Champions

Cheam Fields Club’s mixed doubles champions of 2024 are Holly and Alex Tresadern (above, left). Congratulations to them, and runners-up Philip Thomas and Keerti Sethia, for serving up a quality match.

This match could not be played on Finals Day and was held over until Saturday, 20th July. Thanks to Mike, the chair umpire, and everyone else who supported and made it a special day for the finalists.
